  • Description

BOTHAM: "SENOR ANGEL DE VELASCO, THE FORMER CHIEF OF THE NAZI COUNTER-ESPIONAGE IN SPAIN AND PROMINENT MEMBER OF THE FALANGE, PRINCIPAL SUPPORT OF THE PRESENT REGIME IN THAT COUNTRY, IS IN PARIS FOR TALKS WITH THE DALMAS AGENCY WHO ARE ARRANGING TO PUBLISH HIS MEMOIRS. IN HIS BOOK, SENOR VELASCO, A MEMBER OF HITLER'S BUNKER STAFF IN BERLIN DURING THE LAST MONTHS OF THE WAR, TELLS HOW HE ACCOMPANIED NAZI PARTY LEADER MARTIN BORMANN ON HIS ESCAPE TO SOUTH AMERICA AFTER THE WAR."

"SENOR VELASCO, SEVERAL RELIABLE WITNESSES HAVE STATED THAT BORMANN WAS KILLED IN BERLIN IN MAY 1945. YOU SAY HE WAS NOT. WHY?"

VELASCO (IN SPANISH): "BECAUSE I ACCOMPANIED HIM ON A GERMAN SUBMARINE FROM SPAIN IN MAY 1946. BORMANN CAME TO ME IN MADRID IN JANUARY OF THAT YEAR ACCOMPANIED BY A NAZI AGENT WHO HAD ARRANGED HIS ENTRY INTO SPAIN. HE STAYED IN SPAIN FOR THREE MONTHS IN A PRIVATELY OWNED CASTLE ON THE MEDITERRANEAN COAST. FROM THERE I TOOK HIM TO THE NORTH-WEST ATLANTIC COAST WHERE WE WERE TAKEN ABOARD A GERMAN U-BOAT, WHICH HAD BEEN HELD SECRETLY IN READINESS FOR THIS KIND OF ESCAPE. FOR TWENTY-ONE DAYS I LIVED WITH BORMANN COOPED UP IN THE METAL CABIN OF THAT BOAT. OUR DESTINATION WAS THE PATAGONIAN COAST OF THE ARGENTINE. THERE BORMANN INTENDED TO CONTINUE THE FIGHT TO WIN NAZIS A LEADING PLACE IN THE WORLD."

BOTHAM: "WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SAW BORMANN?"

VELASCO (IN SPANISH): IN JANUARY 1958. I MET HIM AT A SECRET RENDEZVOUS IN ECUADOR, IN A MOUNTAIN VILLAGE. IT WAS A MEETING ATTENDED BY A NUMBER OF OTHER NAZIS, GERMAN AND SOUTH-AMERICAN. BORMANN HAD CHANGED A GREAT DEAL IN THE TWELVE YEARS HE HAD LIVED IN SOUTH AMERICA. HE HAD GROWN OLD. HIS FACE WAS POUCHED AND LINED, AND HE WAS COMPLETELY BALD. HIS NOSE HAD BEEN RE-SHAPED, BY PLASTIC SURGERY HE TOLD ME, AND HE WAS MUCH THINNER THAN THE OLD BORMANN I HAD KNOWN"

    BOTHAM: "WHERE IS BORMANN TODAY?"

VELASCO ( IN SPANISH): "I REALLY DO NOT KNOW."
