  • Description

DESPITE A POLICE BAN, SOME 2,000 STUDENTS FROM ATHENS UNIVERSITY, WHO HAVE BEEN ABSENT FROM CLASSES FOR MORE THAN SIX WEEKS, STAGE A DEMONSTRATION IN THE UNIVERSITY COURT-YARD ON APR 11. THEY CARRIED BANNERS AND SLOGANS ATTACKING THE GREEK GOVERNMENT. CLASHES OCCURRED WHEN A GROUP OF SOME 300 YOUNG MEN ATTEMPTED TO BREAK THROUGH A POLICE CORDON AND MARCH TOWARDS THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION.

FIRE ENGINES WERE BROUGHT IN TO COOL DOWN THE TEMPERS OF THE DEMONSTRATORS WITH JETS OF WATER. MANY OF THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE THEOLOGICAL STUDENTS WHO WERE ASKING THAT THE TEACHING OF RELIGION IN GREEK SCHOOLS SHOULD BE INCREASED TO TWO HOURS A WEEK SO THAT SOME THOUSAND UNEMPLOYED THEOLOGIANS CAN FIND WORK.

POLICE HEADQUARTERS AND HOSPITALS REPORTED THAT 10 STUDENTS AND SEVEN POLICEMEN WERE INJURED IN THE CLASHES IN WHICH ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE STUDENTS CAUSE CAME FROM 200 SALONIKA UNIVERSITY SCHOLARS. ON THE NIGHT OF APR 11, THE UNDER-SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR ANNOUNCED THAT A BAN WAS BEING IMPOSED ON ALL OPEN AIR MEETINGS IN ATHENS.
