    AN ELECTION WHICH WILL TAKE AROUND FOUR AND A HALF WEEKS BEGAN IN NEW GUINEA ON SUNDAY (16 FEBRUARY), TO ELECT 53 MEMBERS OF THE NEW 64-SEAT HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY. WITH VOTING IN THE MAIN CENTRES OF POPULATION NOW COMPLETE - ELECTION OFFICERS, EQUIPPED WITH COLLAPSIBLE VOTING BOOTHS - ARE TAKING THE ELECTION INTO THE REMOTE REGIONS, WHERE SOME OF THE NATIVE HAVE SEEN WHITE MEN ONLY A FEW TIMES BEFORE. (CERTAIN AREAS WHERE NATIVES ARE KNOWN TO BE DANGEROUS, ARE EXCLUDED FROM THE ELECTION).

    AT PORT MORESBY, THE COUNTRY'S ADMINISTRATOR AND HIS WIFE, SIR DONALD AND LADY CLEELAND, WERE AMONG THE FIRST TO CAST THEIR VOTES ... THE FIRST OF MANY, FOR THE GENERAL TURN OUT HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AS 'AMAZING' AND 'FANTASTIC' BY THE CHIEF ELECTORAL OFFICER. VOTING HOURS HAD TO BE EXTENDED IN PORT MORESBY, WHILE IN ANOTHER MAIN CENTRE, RABAUL, OFFICIALS RAN OUT OF VOTING PAPERS.

    IN GENERAL VOTERS WERE CLEAR ABOUT THEIR CHOICE OF CANDIDATE, BUT SOME WERE NOT SURE OF HOW TO RECORD THEIR VOTE. SEVERAL SUPPORTERS OF ONE CANDIDATE ANNOUNCED THEY INTENDED TO PUT THE FIGURE '3' BESIDE HIS NAME TO GIVE HIM THREE TIMES AS MANY VOTES.
