  • Description

WATER FOR DRINKING IS PROVING A PROBLEM FOR THE MOST WATER-CONSCIOUS NATION IN EUROPE - THE DUTCH. IN ROTTERDAM YESTERDAY, (SATURDAY) THE GROCERS WERE SELLING FRESH WATER AT ABOUT THREE PENCE A LITRE (1.8 PINTS) BROUGHT IN TO THE PORT BY TANKERS. TRAILERS FILL UP FROM THESE SHIPS, AND THEN EITHER SERVE LONG QUEUES IN THE STREETS, OR SUPPLY GROVERS DIRECT.

ROTTERDAM DRAWS DRINKING WATER FROM THE RIVER MAAS, ONE OF THE RHINE TRIBUTARIES. BUT DURING THE FOUR-WEEK COLD SPELL, ICE FORMING UPSTREAM HAS PREVENTED THE NORMAL FLOW OF FRESH WATER, ALLOWING THE SEA TO PUSH FARTHER UPSTREAM AND PENETRATE THE WATERWORKS. THIS HAS AFFECTED THE MAINS SUPPLY, MAKING IT UNDRINKABLE - ITS SALT CONTENT IS ABOUT TEN TIMES THE NORMAL.

DUTCH ARMY WATER-TRAILERS CARRIED NEARLY SIX THOUSAND GALLONS OF FRESH WATER INTO ROTTERDAM YESTERDAY FOR HOSPITALS AND INVALIDS. IT IS DISTRIBUTED FROM SPECIAL POINTS THROUGHOUT THE CITY TO PATIENTS PRESCRIBED A SALT-FREE DIET BY THEIR DOCTORS. POLICE WERE CALLED IN TO RESTORE ORDER IN THE VILLAGE OF HOOGVLIET ON THURSDAY. OLD PEOPLE AND CHILDREN HAD BEEN SWEPT ASIDE WHEN DOZENS OF PEOPLE CARRYING BOTTLES AND JERRICANS STORMED A TRAILER BRINGING FRESH WATER TO THE VILLAGE.
