  • Description

Leaders of the Turkish Government last weekend held talks with both the American Secretary of State, Mr.Rusk, and British Foreign Secretary, Lord Home. The two representatives stopped briefly in Ankara on their way to Karachi for a ministerial meeting of the Central Treaty Organisation (Cento), of which Turkey is a regional member, together with Iran and Pakistan.

Arriving on Saturday at Ankara - the Cento headquarters - Mr.Rusk visited the Ataturk Mausoleum to lay a wreath before proceeding to the presidential residence where he signed the book of honour.Later, accompanied by his assistant, Mr.Phillip Talbot, and the U.S.Ambassador to Turkey, Mr.Raymond Hare, he met the Turkish Foreign Minister, Mr.Cemal Erkin, at the "Hariciye Kosku" - a residence for official foreign guests. The meeting, scheduled for 45 minutes, lasted an extra 75 minutes, and centred mainly on American aid to Turkey. The Secretary of State also held talks with President Cemal Gursel before flying on to Pakistan.

On the following day, Sunday, Lord Home arrived and, like Mr.Rusk, went to the Hariciye Kosku for a meeting with the Turkish Foreign Minister, later visiting the Ataturk Mausoleum where he, too, laid a wreath. Then came talks with President Gursel and the Prime Minister, Mr.Inonu.Speaking in the National Assembly on Monday, on the eve of the Cento conference, Mr.Inonu declared that Turkey would stand by her Western alliances. He added that although there were people in Turkey who wanted neutralism, there was definitely no probability of this.
