  • Description

A MEETING ORGANISED BY BRITAIN'S ANTI-NUCLEAR 'COMMITTEE OF 100' WAS THROWN INTO CONFUSION IN LONDON TODAY (SUNDAY) BY A COMMUNIST PARTY MEETING TAKING PLACE ONLY A FEW YARDS AWAY.
BOTH MEETINGS WERE HELD AT HYDE PARK'S FAMOUS 'SPEAKERS CORNER' TO EXPRESS DISAPPROVAL OF THE AMERICAN ACTION OVER NORTH VIETNAM AND BOTH ORGANISATIONS PLANNED SEPARATE MARCHES AND PICKETS ON THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY IN GROSVENOR SQUARE.
A COMMUNIST PARTY OFFICIAL SAID: "WE SHALL PROBABLY MARCH TO THE EMBASSY TOGETHER WITH THE COMMITTEE. BUT THE COMMITTEE OF 100 SPOKESMAN SAID: "IT IS DIFFICULT FOR US BECAUSE BY CRITICISING THE AMERICANS WE MAY APPEAR TO BE TAKING THE COMMUNIST SIDE, WHICH WE DON'T WANT TO DO."
ONLY A HANDFUL OF COMMITTEE OF 100 DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED TO GROSVENOR SQUARE. A FEW BANNERS PROTESTED AGAINST THE U.S. ACTION IN NORTH VIETNAM.
MR. TOMMY FARR, A COMMITTEE OF 100 MEMBER, SAID THEY DID NOT INTEND TO HAND A PETITION INTO THE U.S. EMBASSY, BUT THE PICKET WOULD CONTINUE IN SPITE OF THE SMALL NUMBER TAKING PART.
