  • Description

One hundred and fifty-five African students were in jail in Salisbury, Rhodesia on Wednesday (August 8) after a riot at the University of Rhodesia.

The running battle with the police erupted the previous day after weeks of tension at the University where black students allege discrimination.

The University is the only multiracial institution in Rhodesia and there have been suggestions that it should be segregated. A ruling Rhodesian Front party member in Parliament recently described the University as a centre of filth and subversion.

The riot was related to a demonstration the week before. A disciplinary committee recommended that six students who took part in the demonstration should be expelled and another eight suspended. When the crowd outside the University's lecture theatre heard the decision they raced to the administration block and started throwing stones.

White and black police units on the campus drew batons. Police dogs bit at least two Africans and a local newspaper reporter and some policemen were injured by stones. Windows were smashed, University buildings were damaged and students started fires outside to deter the dogs.
