  • Description

The eradication of River Blindness, a disease caused by a micro-organism which infests the blood, is the topic of a three-day conference which opened in Accra, Chena on Tuesday (3th October).

The conference is sponsored jointly the World Health Organisation (WHO), The United Nations Development Programme, The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) and the World Bank.

The four organisations have joined to carry out a 20-year programme to wipe out the disease which threatens some 10-million people in the Upper Volta River Basin area of West Africa. Thousands have been blinded by the disease in past years.

Delegates at the conference represent the seven countries of the area. Besides Ghana, they are Dahomey, Ivory Coast, Mali, Togo and Upper Volta.

Ghana Head of State, Colonel I. K. Acheampong officially opened the conference, held at State House, Accra. He told delegates that Ghana was proud to have been given the opportunity of playing host to the conference a conference which for thousands of Ghanaians held out much hope for those afflicted or those threatened with the dread disease.
