  • Description

ROD LAVER, THE WORLD'S NUMBER ONE PLAYER, TODAY (24 JUNE 1959) CONFIDENTLY CLEARED THE FIRST OF SEVEN HURDLES HE MUST NEGOTIATE TO RETAIN HIS WIMBLEDON OPEN TENNIS TITLE.

THE LITTLE 30-YEAR-OLD AUSTRALIAN GAVE A MAJESTIC DISPLAY TO BEAT PIETRANGELI 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, IN THE OPENING MATCH ON THE CENTRE COURT.

HIS CRISP EXECUTION OF PIETRANGELI WAS A GREAT PERFORMANCE BY LAVER SO EARLY IN THE TOURNAMENT AND HE LOOKS ODDS-ON TO WIN THE GBP3,000 WHICH GOES WITH THE MEN'S TILE THIS YEAR.

PIETRANGELI, ONCE ONE OF THE GAME'S OUTSTANDING TOUCH PLAYERS, WAS A SEMI-FINALIST AT WIMBLEDON IN 1960. NOW AT 35 HE NEVER TROUBLED THE CHAMPION THOUGH HE WAS FAR FROM DISGRACED. LAVER'S RAPID ALL-COURT FIRE LEFT HIM FLAT-FOOTED TIME AFTER TIME.

MORE THAN 21,000 SPECTATORS PACKED THE GROUNDS OF WIMBLEDON'S ALL ENGLAND CLUB, THE CLUB'S MAUVE AND GREEN FLAG AT HALF MAST IN TRIBUTE TO MRS. MAUREEN CONNOLLY BRINKER, ONE OF THEIR GREATEST CHAMPIONS, WHO WAS BEING BURIED TODAY.
