  • Description

Turkey is currently faced with the most critical foreign exchange shortage in its history and as part of an austerity plan to salvage the country's ailing economy, new measures have been brought in to limit foreign currency expenditure. They were announced at a news conference in the Turkish capital of Ankara on Thursday (16 February) by Finance Minister Ziya Muezzinoglu.

SYNOPSIS: Turkey is the only Mediterranean country with a net loss in its tourist balance. One of the new measures restricts Turkish holidaymakers to one trip abroad every two years -- and only 500 U.S. dollars to take with them.

The news conference was held at the Finance Ministry. Another key point stressed by Mr. Muezzinoglu was that of Turkey's exports.
