  • Description

The Congress of the World International Amateur Boxing Association -- attended by delegates from 43 countries - opened in Dar-as-Salaam, Tanzania, an Monday (23 September).

This is the first time that the Congress -- the eighth to be held -- has been convened in Africa.

It was opened by the Tanzania Minster of Education, Mr. Simon chiwanga. The Minister said that sports is one of the ways of forging and cementing a "oneness" between people and nations.

The Minsters went on to say that he was glad that Tanzania had been chosen as the venue for the Congress. He added: "This is an honour to Africa."
The Congress is to elect a new President to succeed Lieutenant Colonel R.H. Russell of Britain, as well as new Vice-President and members of the Executive Committee.

However, on Tuesday (24 September), a political note crept into this sporting event. The two representatives of Taiwan were expelled from the country by the Tanzanian Foreign Ministery, according to local press reports. Their expulsion was reportedly at the request of The People's Republic of China, although Peking is not affiliated to the Congress.
