  • Description

Mwanawina 111, Paramount Chief of Barotseland -- protectorate of Northern Rhodesian, arrived by launch at Kariba, Nov.17 on an official visit ass guest of the Rhodesian Federation. First stop: to see the vast Kariba Dam, which stems the mighty waters flowing through his own land far above the Victoria Falls.

Accompanied by his son, Mwana Mulena Sii Sii and other Barotse officials, the Chief - an imposing man of 71 -- rode up the artificial Kariba Lake, which already covers 1,000 square tiles.

Mr.G.C.M.Heathcote, Northern Rhodesia's officer for racial affairs explained to the visitors how the Kariba project works.

Mwanawina 111, head of almost 300,000 people of different tribes, is known for his modern outlook and welfare work. His family too, take an active part in the administration of Barotseland. During his chieftaincy, the country has seen much development - both economic and political.

The Barotse are particularly proud of their relationship with Britain within the Commonwealth -- an association dating back to Queen Victoria's time when the ruling Paramount Chief Lewanika asked for protection.
