  • Description

General Alexander Haig, President Nixon's deputy advisor on national security, arrived in Saigon Friday (Nov. 10) to counter powerful south Vietnamese objections to the proposed United States - North Vietnamese peace settlement.

The visit caught the South Vietnamese Government by surprise.

One official said the visit showed that President Nixon, just re-elected for a second four-year term, was taking Saigon's views more into account but also indicated he wanted to move quickly towards a settlement.

No government officials were at the military side of Saigon's Tan Son Nhut Airport to welcome general Haig who arrived on Friday morning.

The envoy drove away accompanied by Ambassador Ellsworth Bunker without making any statement to reporters.
