BEFORE THEY APPEARED, THEIR VITAL STATISTICS WERE TAKEN BY AN ALL-WOMAN COMMITTEE OT ENSURE THERE WAS NO PADDING. THE PROGRAMME LISTING THE FINALISTS GAVE THE GIRLS' AGE, HEIGHT, HAIR COLOURING AND HOBBIES -- BUT NOT BUST, WAIST AND HIP MEASUREMENTS.

    THE GIRLS REPRESENTED SYRIA, JORDAN, THE UNITE ARAB REPUBLIC, MOROCCO, LEBANON AND ARAB 'PALESTINE.' IN THE END, 18-YEAR-OLD LEBANESE GLADY ABIJAOUDE, 36-21-36 INS (93-54-93 CMS), STUDENT AND PART-TIME SECRETARY, WAS DECLARED WINNER. SHE GETS A CASH PRIZE OF 3,000 LEBANESE POUNDS (ABOUT 353 STERLING) AND A TRAVEL TICKET TO A EUROPEAN COUNTRY OF HER CHOICE. THE WINNERS OF SECOND AND THIRD PLACED RECEIVED 1,000 LEBANESE POUNDS (ABOUT 117 STERLING) EACH.

    THERE WERE DISPUTES: MOROCCO'S MISS AYSHA ARSLAN, SAID IT WAS AGAINST HER COUNTRY'S TRADITION TO APPEAR IN COCKTAIL DRESS IN PUBLIC. SHE WAS STILL ALLOWED TO COMPETE.

    JUST BEFORE THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE WINNER, SYRIA'S FERIA JALAL AND UNITED ARAB REPUBLIC'S SHERIFA MOHAMMED SEROUOR WITHDREW FROM THE CONTEST CLAIMING THE JUDGES HAD DECIDED THE RESULTS BEFOREHAND. MISS SEROUR ALSO COMPLAINED THE JUDGES HAD ASKED HER QUESTIONS NOT DIRECTLY CONCERNED WITH THE CONTEST.

    SECOND PLACE FINALLY WENT TO A PALESTINIAN LIVING IN KUWAIT, FERIAL AASFOUR, AND THIRD TO JORDAN'S KATHY GEORGE NASSOURA.
