    MORE THAN 4,000 PEOPLE WERE AT THE CENOTAPH IN WHITEHALL, LONDON, THIS AFTERNOON (SUNDAY) FOR THE ANGLO-RHODESIAN SOCIETY'S REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE. A STRONG POLICE CONTINGENT WAS PRESENT TO ENSURE THAT THERE WERE NO ANTI-BRITISH DEMONSTRATIONS AS OCCURRED LAST YEAR. HOWEVER, THEY HAD TO DISPERSE A SMALL NUMBER OF PRO-RHODESIA CIVILIANS WHO TRIED TO MARCH DOWN DOWNING STREET.

    THE HEAD OF RHODESIA'S RESIDUAL MISSION IN LONDON, MR. SIDNEY BRICE, LAID A WREATH IN MEMORY OF THE DEAD OF TWO WORLD WARS ON BEHALF OF MR. SMITH'S REGIME: MR. BRICE LAID THE WREATH, SIMPLY MARKED "RHODESIA" IMMEDIATELY BEFORE THE SERVICE. OTHER WREATHS WERE LAID BY LORD SALISBURY AND VICE-ADMIRAL SIR PEVERIL WILLIAM-POWLETT. A SALVATION ARMY BAND WAS AT THE CEREMONY AND A BUGLER PLATED THE LAST POST.

    THE SERVICE WAS HELD ABOUT THREE HOURS AFTER THE MAIN CEREMONY OF REMEMBRANCE DAY AT THE CENOTAPH, WHICH WAS ATTENDED BY THE QUEEN. AND FOR THE SECOND YEAR RUNNING, THERE WAS NO RHODESIAN REPRESENTATIVE AT THE CEREMONY. THE COMMONWEALTH SECRETARY, MR. GEORGE THOMSON, WHO RETURNED YESTERDAY FROM TALKS WITH MR. SMITH, LAID TWO WREATHS - ONE FOR RHODESIA AND ONE FOR DEPENDENT TERRITORIES AND PROTECTORATES.
