  • Description

THE MILITANT BUDDHIST LEADER THEIM MINH TO TEN YEARS HARD LABOUR LAST WEEK BY A MILITARY COURT IN SAIGON. HE WAS FOUND GUILTY OF HARBOURING REBELS, AND KEEPING ILLEGAL DOCUMENTS AND WEAPONS. EIGHT STUDENTS APPEARING WITH HIM RECEIVED SENTENCES RANGING FROM 20 YEARS HARD LABOUR TO 3 YEARS IMPRISONMENT.

FOLLOWING THE SENTENCE 500 MILITANT BUDDHISTS CROWDED INTO THE CENTRAL SAIGON AN-QUANG PAGODA TO PRAY IN PROTEST AT THIEN MINH'S HEAVY SENTENCE. BUDDHIST PRIEST DID NOT CALL THE EXPECTED STREET DEMONSTRATIONS. THEY SAY THAT FOR THE PRESENT THERE ARE OTHER FORMS OF PROTEST.

MILITANT BUDDHIST LEADER, THICH TRI QUANG, MAKING HIS FIRST PUBLIC APPEARANCE FOR TWO YEARS, TOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE AT THE PAGODA THAT BUDDHISTS WOULD BE WILLING TO DIE FOR THE GOOD OF THE NATION, OR FOR THE CAUSE OF PEACE.

YESTERDAY, A SECOND MILITARY COURT PASSED A FURTHER SENTENCE ON THIEN MINH, IN HIS ABSENCE. THIS TIME THE SENTENCE WAS FIVE YEARS FOR AIDING DESERTERS AND DRAFT DODGERS. THE TWO SENTENCES WILL RUN CONCURRENTLY DESPITE THE PRIEST'S CALL FOR NO DEMONSTRATIONS SOME OBSERVERS FEAR SERIOUS BUDDHIST DISTURBANCES.

A STATEMENT BY THICH THIEN HOA, CHAIRMAN OF THE UNITED BUDDHIST CHURCH, SAID THE SAIGON GOVERNMENT WAS BENT ON DESTROYING BUDDHISM.
