    RUCKELSHAUS: "I just talked to the President this afternoon about it, and that was the notice that I had."

    REPORTER: "Did you have any conversation with the President relative to the substance of the charges against Mr. Haldeman and Mr. Ehrlichman?"

    RUCKELSHAUS: "No, not at this point, I did not. I was, of course... er.. they're serious charges, and I was very interested to listen to the President say that he was very concerned that a storing, honest, fair, vigorous investigation continue into all of these charges."

    REPORTER: "Did he give the impression that he would take action against Ehrlichman and Haldeman if they were involved in over acts?"

    RUCKELSHAUS: "I know you got the impression, but I got the honest statement from the President that, no matter who was involved in this matter, that there would be no sparing of anybody, regardless of their position here or any place else."

    Background: United States President Richard Nixon named a new acting head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Friday (27 April). The new man is William Ruckelshaus, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency. He takes over from Mr. Patrick Gray, who resigned abruptly on Friday after reports that he'd destroyed White House documents on instructions from some of the President's aides whose names had been linked with the Watergate bugging.

    Mr. Ruckelshaus told a news conference at the White House that he'd been told by the President to conduct a thorough, honest, fair and storing investigation of the bugging of Democratic Party Headquarters.

    He said that the President had told him to spare absolutely nobody.

    SYNOPSIS: In Washington on Friday, the newly-appointed stand-in head of the FBI, Mr. William Ruckelshaus took over from former FBI Chief Patrick Gray. Newsmen asked him whether he had been told to take over the Watergate bugging investigations.
