    THE FLOOD WHICH HIT LISBON AND OTHER PARTS OF PORTUGAL AT THE WEEKEND HAVE SUBSIDED, BUT PEOPLE OF THE STRICKEN AREAS THERE IS FURTHER SADNESS AHEAD AS THEY BEGIN CLEARING UP AFTER THE SWIRLING TORRENT.

    THE FLOODWATERS HAVE LEFT A LATER OF GREASY SILT OVER A WIDE AREA. THE MUD, OIL AND ? HAS PENETRATED HOMES AND BUILDINGS AND WILL TAKE WEEKS TO REMOVE.

    AT LEAST 240 PEOPLES HAVE DIED ON THE FLOODING, AND NOW THERE IS A DANGER OF TYPHOON BREAKING OUT IN AREAS WHERE THE DRAINAGE AND SEWAGE FACILITIES HAVE FAILED AND THERE IS NO FRESH WATERS.

    THE LOSS TO PROPERTY IS INCALCUABLE. MANY PEOPLE HAVE LOST EVERYTHING; OTHERS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SALVAGE WATER SOAKED FURNITURE AND OTHER HOUSEHOLD ITEMS FROM THE CARPET OF DEBRIS.

    IT IS EXPECTED TO THE SOME WEEKS BEFORE LISBON AND THE DAILY LIFE OF THE CITY'S PEOPLE HAVE RETURNED TO NORMAL.
