  • Description

THE SWOLLEN WATERS OF THE MEKONG RIVER HAVE DEVASTATED LARGE AREAS OF LAOS AND NORTHERN THAILAND.

IT IS ONE OF THE WORST CALAMITIES TO HIT LAOS IN LIVING MEMORY WITH THE LOSS OF NEARLY 80 PER CENT OF THE SEASON'S RICE CROP.

FORTY PEOPLE ARE KNOWN TO HAVE DIED IN THE FLOODING AND THE DEATH TOOL IS EXPECTED TO RISE CONSIDERABLY WHEN THE WATERS RECEDE.

MORE THAN 35--THOUSAND PEOPLE HAVE LEFT RURAL AREAS AND SOUGHT SHELTER IN MAKE-SHIFT CAMPS IN THE CAPITAL, VIENTIANE.

THE SUBURBS OF VIENTIANE ARE ALSO AFFECTED BY THE FLOOD AND THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN STRANDED FOR SEVERAL DAYS WITHOUT FOOD, WATER OR MEDICAL SUPPLIES. VIENTIANE AIRPORT IS UNDER 12 FEET (THREE METRES) OF WATER, AND AIRCRAFT HAVE BEEN HALF-SUBMERGED.

BRITISH TROOPS FROM MALAYSIA AND SINGAPORE HAVE BEEN ASSISTING IN RESCUE OPERATIONS, AND HAVE PROVIDED MANY STRANDED FAMILIES WITH FOOD AND PURIFIED WATER.

BRITISH AND UNITED STATES HELICOPTERS ARE ALSO BEING USED IN RESCUE WORK.

CHILDREN, UNAWARE OF THE DISASTROUS EFFECTS OF THE FLOOD, HAVE BEEN BUSY CATCHING FISH TO STOCK THEIR AQUARIUMS.

WHEN THE WATERS RECEDE BOTH LAOS AND THAILAND FACE A NEW THREAT -- THE DANGER OF EPIDEMICS OF TYPHOID AND DYSENTERY.
