  • Description

Yugoslavia have earned a play-off with Spain for the last World Cup place, with their 4-2 win in Greece on Wednesday (December 19).

The Yugoslavs had to win by more than two goals in Athens to overtake Spain at the top of their World Cup qualifying group. Greece had lost all their three World Cup games and were at the bottom of the table.

The talented Yugoslavs brought star forward Dzajic back into the side although he had only just recovered from a broken leg. They attacked the home side from the start and after only 11 minutes Patkovic finished off a fine movement by heading into goal. Three minutes later Karassi's powerful shot gave them the two goal lead they needed, but Greece replied quickly with an excellent 25 yard shot from Eleftherakis.

Yugoslav forward Bajevic was sent off in the 34th minute for fouling Glezos. Reduced to ten men, Yugoslavia lost their early confidence. Katalinski put into his own goal just before half time, and with the score 2-2 it seemed their chance had gone. Karassi changed that in the second half. Greek goalkeeper Kelessidis could only parry his shot and Surjak scored from the rebound. Surjak headed wide from close in three minutes later, but just when it seemed the Yugoslavs had given everything, Karassi shot the decisive goal in the last seconds of the match.

Yugoslavia play Spain for the last World Cup place in Paris on February 16.
