United Nations Secretary-General Dr. Kurt waldheim arrived in Cyprus on Sunday (August 25). The following day he brought together the Island's rival leaders: Greek Cypriot Acting President Glafkos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash. It was the first time the two had met since the Geneva peace talks collapsed two weeks ago. After the meeting, Dr. Waldheim said that the talks "were held in a positive and constructive spirit."
But Mr. Denktash spoke in strongly challenging terms, warning that if Greek Cypriots started a guerrilla war, the Turks might try to seize control of the entire Island.
