  • Description

SOME PARTS OF SUBURBAN DELHI WERE TWO FEET (60 CENTIMETRES) UNDER WATER TODAY (THURSDAY) AND OFFICIALS PREDICTED A FURTHER RISE IN THE FLOODWATERS FROM THE NEIGHBOURING PUNJAB STATE.

A FLEET OF 50 BOATS YESTERDAY EVACUATED MAROONED VILLAGERS FROM 26 VILLAGES NEAR DELHI, AND 250 FAMILIES WERE EVACUATED FROM THE DELHI SUBURB OF TILAKNAGAR.

FIVE PEOPLE ARE KNOWN TO HAVE DIED IN THE FLOODS YESTERDAY, BRINGING THE TOTAL NUMBER DEAD TO MORE THAN 40.

THE FLOODS FOLLOW THE HEAVIEST MONSOON RAINFALL EVER RECORDED. OFFICIALS SAID TODAY THAT MORE THAN 3,500 HOMES IN RURAL DELHI HAD BEEN WASHED AWAY AND SEVERAL THOUSAND MORE WERE DAMAGED.

NO RAIN HAS BEEN REPORTED IN DELHI TODAY, BUT THE SKY IS OVERCAST AND THE FORECAST PROMISES MORE RAIN.

SOME OF THE WORST FLOODING HAS STEMMED FROM A 380 FOOT (115 METRE) GAP IN THE EMBANKMENT OF THE SWOLLEN DHASSA RIVER, 30 MILES FROM THE CENTRE OF DELHI.

THE EMBANKMENT WAS DELIBERATELY CUT EARLIER THIS WEEK TO PREVENT IT BEING WASHED AWAY ENTIRELY. HOWEVER THE MAN-MADE GAP RAPIDLY WIDENED AS FLOOD WATERS POURED THROUGH. INDIAN ARMY ENGINEERS ARE LEADING A VAST NUMBER OF WORKERS IN AN EFFORT TO STOP FURTHER BREACHES IN THE EMBANKMENT WHERE THE RIVER CONTINUES TO RISE.

WITH THOUSAND HOMELESS, THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT HAS SET UP A NUMBER OF RELIEF CAMPS WHERE FREE FOOD RATIONS ARE DISTRIBUTED. FOOD CROPS, ALREADY A NATIONAL CRISIS IN INDIA, HAVE BEEN TOTALLY DESTROYED IN MUCH OF THE FLOODED AREA.

THE FLOODS HAVE ALSO BROUGHT THE ADDED RISK OF DISEASE AND THE GOVERNMENT IS PLANNING A MASSIVE INOCULATION CAMPAIGN TO LIMIT THE DANCER.

WHILE THE FLOODS CONTINUE THERE IS NO OFFICIAL ESTIMATE OF THE COST OF THE DISASTER. IT COULD EXCEED HALF A MILLION POUNDS.
