  • Description

The United States Coast Guard headquarters in Washington announced Friday (5 April) that more planes, ships and men would operate in the Florida straits.

The purpose of the increased activity...reflected in this film at the Miami, Florida, Coast Guard Station... is to prevent new attacks by exile raiders against Fidel Castro's Cuba. Six more planes and twelve more boats will reinforce Coast Guard patrols working out of Florida and Puerto Rico.

Most of the activity is directed from the Coast Control Center at Miami. While the patrols began stepped-up operations, the Violynn Third, a raiding launch intercepted by a British frigate Sunday (31 March), returned to Miami on Friday (5 April). The boat was minus its fuel, machine guns and twenty-millimeter cannon when it arrived. A crewman swam ashore and made arrangements for surrender of the 17-man crew.

Jerry Buchanan, twenty-four, said the crewmen had thrown their weapons overboard. Immigration officials questioned the seventeen....and released Buchanan, a native American, and another American citizen soon afterward.
