  • Description

A 25-MAN HONG KONG POLICE PARTY MADE ONE OF THE LARGEST DRUG HAULS IN RECENT MONTHS WHEN THEY RAIDED A CHICKEN FARM IN THE NEW TERRITORIES LAST WEEK. THEY SEIZED ABOUT 3,600 POUNDS OF RAW OPIUM AND 300 POUNDS OF MORPHINE. THEIR RETAIL VALUE WAS ESTIMATED AT ABOUT GBP875,000 STERLING. AS A RESULT OF THE RAID THREE CHINESE WERE DETAINED FOR QUESTIONING. THE FARM WAS RAIDED AFTER NEARLY A YEAR OF INVESTIGATIONS DURING WHICH POLICE HAD KEPT CERTAIN PEOPLE UNDER OBSERVATION. THE HAUL WAS CONTAINED IN 43 WATER-TIGHT TINS, KEPT UNDER TARPAULIN IN A GARAGE ON THE CHICKEN FARM. THE OPIUM AND MORPHINE WERE IN A SMALL PLASTIC BAGS. THE SACKING COVERING THE TINS WAS WET, AND THERE WERE SUGGESTIONS THAT THE TINS WERE THROWN OVERBOARD FROM A SHIP AND PICKED LATER. PREVIOUS DRUG SEIZURES INCLUDED A HAUL IN FEBRUARY LAST YEAR, WHICH WAS ALSO ON A CHICKEN FARM IN THE NEW TERRITORIES. THE HAUL CONSISTED OF ABOUT 4.600 POUNDS OF RAW OPIUM AND 300 POUNDS OF MORPHINE. IN AUGUST THIS YEAR, 3,000 POUNDS OF RAW OPIUM AND 300 POUNDS OF MORPHINE WERE FOUND HIDDEN IN REFRIGERATORS TRANSPORTED FROM SINGAPORE. LAST MONTH HONG KONG LAUNCHED A BIG CAMPAIGN AGAINST DRUG ADDICTION, ONE OF THE MAJOR SOCIAL PROBLEMS AFFECTING THE FOUR MILLION POPULATION. THE PROGRAMME HAS THE SUPPORT AND ACTIVE PARTICIPATION OF GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS, WELFARE AND PUBLIC SERVICE ORGANISATIONS AS WELL AS PRIVATE CITIZENS.

SYNOPSIS: IN A RECENT SURPRISE RAID ON AN INNOCENT-LOOKING CHICKEN FARM A HONG KONG POLICE SQUAD SEIZED A DRUG-HAUL VALUED AT EIGHT HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-FIVE THOUSAND POUNDS STERLING. HERE SUSPECTS ARE SEARCHED. THE RAID CAME AFTER A YEAR OF POLICE INVESTIGATIONS IN WHICH SEVERAL PEOPLE WERE KEPT UNDER CLOSE OBSERVATION THE DRUGS - MAINLY IN THE FORM OF RAW OPIUM, BUT INCLUDING A LARGE QUANTITY OF MORPHINE - WERE HIDDEN IN WATERTIGHT TINS UNDER A TARPAULIN IN A GARAGE ON THE FARM. THE SACKING COVERING THE TINS WAS WET, AND THE POLICE WERE CONSIDERING THE POSSIBILITY THAT THE DRUGS HAD BEEN THROWN OVERBOARD FROM A SHIP AND RECOVERED LATER. IN FEBRUARY OF LAST YEAR ANOTHER LARGE DRUG HAUL WAS RECOVERED BY THE POLICE - ALSO FROM A CHICKEN FARM IN THE SAME AREA. AND IN AUGUST THIS YEAR QUANTITIES OF OPIUM AND MORPHINE WERE FOUND IN REFRIGERATORS WHICH HAD COME FROM SINGAPORE. THE HAUL FOLLOWED THE ANNOUNCEMENT LAST MONTH OF A BIG CAMPAIGN IN HONG KONG AGAINST DRUG-ADDICTION.
