  • Description

The International Caravan and Camping Show opened at Earl's Court in London on Thursday (7 November), with mobile homes emerging as star attractions.

While intending holidaymakers look to mobile homes as a form of escapism, the critical housing shortage in the United Kingdom is forcing many Britons to seek them as chaper, more readily available permanent accommodation.

There are an estimated half a million caravans in Britain--about half of them static holiday homes.

But latest figures show that there are also just under one-hundred-thousand British families now living permanently in mobile homes, and the number is rising rapidly.

Manufacturers have been quick to appreciate this addition to the traditional holiday market.

Prices range from about GBP 1000 sterling (US 2,400 dollars) upwards and many designs incorporate luxury appointments and fittings.
