Background: In South Vietnam government forces have been on the alert for the past few days as celebrations to mark Tet -- the lunar new year -- approached. In 1968 communist forces chose the time of Tet celebrations to mark Tet -- the lunar few year -- approached. In 1968 communist forces chose the time of Tet celebrations to launch fierce attacks on government positions and cities all over the country.

Mindful of this, security forces are on full alert and all leave has been cancelled. The families of many soldiers have travelled into the field to be with them during the Tet celebrations.

The soldiers have been given gifts of money by representatives of local organisations. The amount for each man is small, about enough to buy one-and-a-half water melons -- a traditional food for Tet.

Several thousand military and police is enforcements were deployed in Saigon on the eve of Tet (10 February), but the first day of the new year passed without incident although fighting continued in various outlying parts of the country.
