    LA PAZ, 3,600 METERS (12,000 FEET) ABOVE SEA LEVEL, IS THE ADMINISTRATIVE CENTRE OF BOLIVIA, ALTHOUGH THE LEGAL CAPITAL IS THE SMALLER CITY OF SUCRE.

    THE BUILDING BOOM IN LA PAZ BEGAN JUST OVER A YEAR AGO, AFTER A PERIOD OF 15 YEARS IN WHICH NO NEW COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS WERE ERECTED IN THE CITY.

    NOW THERE ARE 30 BUILDING UNDER CONSTRUCTION, INCLUDING OFFICE BLOCKS AND APARTMENTS, SOME UP TO 15 STOREY HIGH. THE LA PAZ CITY COUNCIL APPLICATIONS FOR ANOTHER 80 LARGE BUILDING PROJECTS BEFORE IT.

    WORK NOW IN PROGRESS REPRESENTS AN INVESTMENT EXCEEDING 6-MILLION U.S. DOLLARS, AND MOST OF THE APARTMENT UNDER CONSTRUCTION HAVE ALREADY BEEN SOLD.

    LA PAZ HAS A POPULATION OF 460-THOUSAND, AND IS BY FAR THE LARGEST CITY OF THE LANDLOCKED REPUBLIC. THE CITY IS SITUATED HIGH IN THE ANDES, WITHIN SIGHT OF THE PEAK OF ILLIMANA, OVER 20-THOUSAND FEET (6,000 METERS) HIGH. IT HAS BEEN POPULATED SINCE THE DAYS OF THE INCA EMPIRES.
