Background: Government troops have launched a successful counter-attack against Communist forces in South Vietnam's Tay Ninh province, close to the Khmer Republic border.
In recent weeks the Communists have taken control of three Government outposts and threatened the security of Highway 22. This week troops from the Government's 25th. Division moved to ease pressure on the highway which links Tay Ninh with Saigon.
Armoured personnel carriers took the troops towards the outpost of Go Chua in the Go Dau Ha district. The outpost had been surrounded by enemy forces for nine days. The Government troops cleared the outpost and also the village of Hiep Thanh.
Helicopter gunships supported the assault.
The Government troops also moved against enemy forces which had surrounded the outposts of Cau Khoi and Suoi Cao. Civilian guards had held off the Communist troops until help arrived.
Despite the success of this latest action, Communist pressure is still considered serious in the area.
