  • Description

PUBLIC SCHOOLS HAVE BEEN CLOSED FOR FOUR YEARS IN FARMVILLE, VIRGINIA, THE ONLY PLACE IN THE UNITED STATES WITHOUT PUBLIC EDUCATION.

THE WHITE SEGREGATIONIST VOTERS IN THE COMMUNITY VOTED TO CLOSE THEM DOWN, RATHER THAN COMPLY WITH A U.S. SUPREME COURT ORDER TO INTEGRATE THEM. THE EFFECT HAS BEEN THAT 1,600 NEGRO CHILDREN CANNOT GO TO SCHOOL. WHITES, HOWEVER, HAVE SET UP A PRIVATE SCHOOL WHICH ONLY WHITE CHILDREN ATTEND.

ATTEMPTS HAVE BEEN MADE TO SET UP MAKESHIFTS SCHOOLS TO GIVE THE NEGRO CHILDREN A BASIC EDUCATION. MANY OF THESE CHILDREN - THOSE UNDER II - NEVER HAVE SEEN THE INSIDE OF A PUBLIC SCHOOL.

THE EFFECT ON THE COMMUNITY WAS DISCUSSED BY NBC REPORTER WILLIAM PERCIVAL WITH NEGRO MINISTER THE REVEREND FRANCIS GRIFFIN OF THE FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH, WHOSE CHURCH IS BEING USED AS A MAKE-SHIFT SCHOOL, AND BY DR. GORDON MOSS, THE WHITE DEAN OF LONGWOOD COLLEGE (A TEACHER'S COLLEGE), AN OUTSPOKEN FOE OF SEGREGATION. DR. MOSS HAS BEEN OSTRACIZED FOR HIS VIEWS ON THE MATTER.
