  • Description

Despite delays, Zambia's first satellite earth station is currently nearing completion outside Lusaka. When operational -- and its due to be commissioned in October - the station will give Zambia direct inter-continental telephone links and enable the county receive television satellite transmissions.

Originally, the project was due to be opened this month. But a whole variety of problems conspired to delay progress. Station equipment being manufactured at a Nippon Electric Company factory in Japan was damaged by an explosion.

In addition, there have been difficulties transporting equipment to Zambia, caused by the oil crisis and the closure of the Zambia-Rhodesia border. And the project was also hampered by a technical fault.

Now, however, final tests are underway. And if all goes well the station's official opening in October will coincide with Zambia's 10th anniversary of independence.
