  • Description

African ministers of commerce and industry met in Addis Ababa on Monday (3 May) for the start of their six day conference on the problems facing the continent's industry in the seventies.

This conference--the first of its kind--is sponsored jointly by the Economic Commission for Africa and the Organisation of African Unity, and aims to formulate industrial policies for the coming decade. Africa's performance in this field throughout the sixties is being reviewed, while discussions are also being held on the obstacles holding up the flow of domestic resources to industrial development areas.

The conference was opened by Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia. He told the delegates, assembled from all over the continent, that the aspiration of industrialisation and development was the very essence of political independence of African nations. He said that only when the peoples of Africa enjoy the standard of living and well being that this age of great technological and scientific advance has brought within the reach of mankind does political independence achieve its true meaning.
