    THE UNITED STATES HAS NINE NEW ASTRONAUTS...CANDIDATES TO BECOME AMERICA'S FIRST MEN TO LAND ON THE MOON.

    THE NINE YOUNG MEN..THEY AVERAGE 32-AND-A-HALF YEARS OLD - TWO YEARS YOUNGER THAN THE ORIGINAL SEVEN ASTRONAUTS...WERE INTRODUCED TO THE NATION YESTERDAY (SEPTEMBER 17) AT AN AUDITORIUM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON, TEXAS. THEY WILL REPORT FOR DUTY OCTOBER 1 AT A NEW MANNED SPACECRAFT CENTRE AT HOUSTON.

    THE NINE INCLUDE TWO CIVILIANS, FOUR AIR FORCE OFFICERS AND THREE NAVY OFFICERS. THEY ARE ALL MARRIED AND HAVE CHILDREN. SELECTED FROM A GROUP OF 253 MILITARY AND CIVILIAN VOLUNTEERS AFTER SIX MONTHS OF INTENSIVE EVALUATION, THE NINE WILL TRAIN FOR PROJECT GEMINI AND PROJECT APOLLO. GEMINI IS THE NAME GIVEN TO PLANS FOR A SPACE RENDEZVOUS BY TWO MANNED CAPSULES IN 1964... APOLLO IS THE MOON LANDING ITSELF SCHEDULED LATE IN THIS DECADE.

    JAMES A. LOVELL, JR. A 32 YEAR OLD NAVY LIEUTENANT COMMANDER.

    JAMES A. MCDIVITT. A 33 YEAR OLD AIR FORCE CAPTAIN.

    ELLIOT M. SEE, JR. A 35 YEAR OLD GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY EXPERIMENTAL TEST PILOT.

    THOMAS P. STAFFORD. A 32 YEAR OLD AIR FORCE CAPTAIN.
