  • Description

INDIA IS FACING ONE OF THE WORST FAMINES IT HAS EVER KNOWN. THE FAILURE OF THE MONSOONS HAS ALREADY LED TO FOOD RATIONING IN AREA WHERE THERE MAY BE JUST ENOUGH TO GO ROUND. THE INDIAN FOOD MINISTRY SAYS ABOUT TWELVE MILLION PEOPLE ARE SUFFERING ACUTE DISTRESS IN NEAR FAMINE CONDITIONS. MANY HAVE BEEN SAVED FROM STARVATION ONLY BY RELIEF CAPS AND THE FREE DISTRIBUTION OF EMERGENCY SUPPLIES.

THE DROUGHT MAY LEAVE INDIA'S SUMMER AND WINTER HARVESTS SHORT BY ABOUT FIFTEEN MILLION TONS. THE GOVERNMENT IS RELYING ON MASSIVE IMPORTS OF FOODGRAINS TO FILL THIS GAP. AMERICA ALONE HAS PROMISED SOME 4 1/2 MILLION TONS. NINETY U.S. FOOD SHIPS WILL BRING THREE MILLION TONS OF WHEAT AND MAIZE TO INDIA'S PORTS THIS MONTH AND NEXT. OTHER OFFERS OF ASSISTANCE TO INDIA HAVE BEEN RECEIVED FROM AUSTRALIA, CANADA, HOLLAND, SWEDEN, BRITAIN AND YUGOSLAVIA IN THE FORM OF MONEY, SHIPPING OR CONSIGNMENTS OF WHEAT AND POWDERED MILK.

IF PEOPLE IN THE SCARCITY AREAS ARE TO BE FED REGULARLY INDIA WILL NEED ALL THE RESOURCES OF ITS PORTS, RAILWAYS, BARGES AND ROADS AS WELL AS EXTRA MANPOWER TO UNLOAD THE SHIPS AT THE HIGHEST POSSIBLE SPEND. PEOPLE IN THE FAMINE-HIT STATE OF KERALA ARE STILL RECEIVING A RATION OF ONLY FIVE OUNCES OF RICE A DAY.
