  • Description

Thousands of Japanese dressed in their traditional kimonos visited the Imperial Palace in Tokyo to pay respect to Emperor Hirohito on his 74th birthday on Tuesday (29 April).

Some 43,500 of them filed through a massive gate to the grounds of the Palace on a yearly visit to see the Emperor at one of his rare public appearances.

Emperor Hirohito and his Imperial Family received their greetings from behind bullet-proof glass. He was greeted with cries of Banzai Long Live the Emperor -- and a sea of fluttering paper flags.
