  • Description

Violence erupted in Santiago on Monday (16 October) the sixth day of Chile's crippling road transport strike.

Food, fuel and other essential supplied have been running short in the major cities as shopkeepers and businessmen continue to keep their businesses closed in sympathy with striking truck owners who are protesting against Government plane to nationalise transport services in the far south of the country.

The violence broke out when police turned a water cannon on former President Jorge Alessandri and a group of his supporters. Angry demonstrators counter-attacked, and the police called in teargas squads.

In another incident, riot squads carrying shields and armed with batons broke up a crowd of government opponents who had gathered outside a shoe store, after rumours that the authorities planned to force it to reopen.

Chile's Government has warned the businessmen that unless they end their support for the truck owners, which began last Friday (13 October), they face requisitioning of their goods.

A curfew was ordered on Tuesday night (17 October), and Chile's Marxist President Salvador Allende has warned of the danger of a civil war.
