Background: Wearing an embroidered silver dress which was given to her anonymously, Miss Shirley Holmes - the girl with a 'hole-in-the heart' was married to Italian soldier Ciulio Comparini, at the Roman Catholic church of St. Joseph's, Bavant, Hampshire today.
Miss Holmes who was born with a heart defect - quite literally a small hole which allows 'used' and 're-oxygenated' blood to single slightly met Comparini while on holiday in Italy last year. They kept in contact when she returned to Britain but doctors warned her that marriage, in her condition, could endanger her life.
Nevertheless, she was prepared to fly to Italy to see Comparini recently, and upon hearing this, the Italian authorities granted the soldier one month's special leave on that intend he could come to England. Shortly after his arrival the couple announced that they would get married.
After the wedding, during which the vows were put to Comparini in Italian (He cannot speak English), the happy couple left for a week's honeymoon as guests of a hotel in Hyde, Tale of Night. Afterwards they will decide whether Comparini will return to Italy and come back to England after his demobilisation or whether they will both go and settle in Italy.
