  • Description

An estimated one million people -- about half the population -- fled the Venezuelan capital of Caracas last week after predictions of an earthquake on Saturday (27 August) and the reported appearances of creatures from outer space warning of the disaster. No-one quite knows who made the predictions. Ten years ago an earthquake did hit the city, causing much damage and several deaths.

SYNOPSIS: Caracas is in a valley surrounded by hills, and last week rumours were sweeping the city that the major mountain between the capital and the Caribbean sea would split in the 'quake, flooding the entire area. By Saturday, normally-busy highways in and out of the city ere almost deserted - most of the motorists apparently having take advantage of their mobility to leave the capital. Newspapers varied in Their reactions to the predictions, but there were few people remaining in the usually-crowded cafes to read them.

The predicted time of the earthquake came -- and went. Time passed, and nothing happened. Those residents who did remain in the city gathered in the popular pavement cafes to celebrate -- either having remained because they were sceptical of the predictions, or because they were too poor to leave. Meanwhile, as Sunday evening (28 August) came to the city and residents began returning, speculation remained. Was it university students conducting psychology experiment into mass hysteria, or were there really visitors from outer space?"
