  • Description

A special slide and water jump, claimed to be the first of its kind in the world, has been built at Stabekk, Norway, to provide Summer training for Norwegian ski jumpers who will compete in the Olympic Games Winter sports in Squaw Valley, California, U.S.A. February 1960.

The ski jumpers slide down a chute covered with oil and water, wearing their skis, which are also oil treated, then dive into a lake. The ski men reach a breath-taking speed by the time they leap towards the water from the end of the chute.

Ski-ing and ski jumping have long been among Norway's national sports. Normally there has been enough snow in the Summer for orthodox ski jump training, but recently the Summer snow has been unsatisfactory, and so Stabekk built its unusual water jump.
