  • Description

AFRICA'S FIRST ATOMIC REACTOR TRIGA MK I WAS THE SUBJECT OF AN ADDRESS BY CONGO-KINSHASA'S COMMISSIONER FOR NUCLEAR SCIENCES, PROFESSOR MALU, TO AFRICAN AMBASSADORS AT THE TRICO CENTRE OF LOVANIUM UNIVERSITY. THE EXPERIMENTAL REACTOR BEGAN OPERATION IN 1959, AND IS NOW UNDERGOING VARIOUS CHANGES TO INCREASE ITS OUTPUT.

THE INTERNATIONAL ATOMIC ENERGY AGENCY HAS ACCEPTED THE CONGO-KINSHASA GOVERNMENT'S OFFER TO TURN THE TRICO CENTRE INTO A REGIONAL CENTRE FOR THE USE OF TROPICAL AFRICA. THIS WAS RATIFIED LAST SEPTEMBER BY THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY.

WITH A MAXIMUM OUTPUT RATING OF 50 KILOWATTS, THE REACTOR HAS MADE SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO RESEARCH ON NUCLEAR ENERGY FOR MEDICINE, AGRICULTURE, PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY.

IMPORTANT MODIFICATIONS ARE NOW WIDENING ITS SCOPE AND FIELD OF APPLICATION.

TO END THEIR VISIT, THE AMBASSADORS PASSED THE RADIATION TEST WHICH SHOWED THAT EVEN THE CLOSE PROXIMITY OF THE REACTOR IS HARMLESS TO THE HUMAN BODY.
