  • Description

The body of ninety-year-old King Gustav Adolf of Sweden was buried in a grove oak and elm trees outside Stockholm Tuesday (25 September) with Kings and Presidents among the mourners.

Hundreds of thousands of Swedes stood in sorrow on the street as the King's coffin, draped with the Royal mantle of blue and gold, was borne on an open carriage decked with pine branches to the burial place at Haga Palace.

Five kings and ex-kings, four queens, four-presidents, princes, dukes and prime minister were among the chief mourners. The new King Gustaf, walked grave-faced in the procession behind the hearse, drawn by six horses, as the body of the late monarch, his grandfather, was borne through the centre of Stockholm.

SYNOPSIS: In Stockholm, Tuesday, the world paid its last respects to King Gustav Adolf.

The new King, Carl Gustaf, led the assembled dignitaries in mourning the passing of Sweden's much-loved monarch. Five Kings, and ex-kings, four queens, four presidents, princes, dukes and prime ministers were at the ceremony marking the passing of europe's oldest ruler.

The death of King Gustav marks the end of an era. The ninety-year-old King was probably the last Swedish monarch to perform any but ceremonial functions. Under a new constitution, Swedish Kings will never again have even the ritual trappings of political power.

Large crowds lined the streets of Stockholm or a last glimpse of the King as he was carried to a quiet country spot outside the city for burial.
