TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 4: INTERVIEWER: "IS THAT AN IMPLIED CRITICISM OF MR WILSON'S RECENT STATEMENT?"

WELENSKY: "NO, I DON'T THINK MR WILSON'S ANY MORE TO BLAME THAN OTHER PEOPLE, BUT I'M ALL FOR GOVERNMENTS DEALING WITH NEGOTIATIONS BEHIND CLOSED DOORS, BECAUSE ONE IS APT TO TAKE UP AN ENTRENCHED POSITION WHEN YOU MAKE A STATEMENTS IN PUBLIC. IT'S VERY DIFFICULT TO CHANGE, WHEREAS YOU CAN ARGUE ROUND A TABLE."

SEQ. 5: INTERVIEWER: "NOW, THE REFERENDUM TAKES PLACE IN YOUR COUNTRY TOMORROW. IT'S GENERALLY ASSUMED THAT MR SMITH WILL GET AN ENDORSEMENT OF HIS POINT OF VIEW. WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN THEN?"

SEQ. 6: WELENSKY: WELL, OF COURSE, THIS HAS BEEN RATHER A DIFFICULT THING TO UNDERSTAND IN THE LIGHT OF THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER'S ATTITUDE TO WHAT PURPOSE THE REFERENDUM IS GOING TO SERVE. BUT I THINK THE BASIC THINKING BEHIND MR SMITH'S APPROACH IS THAT HE DOES WANT TO KNOW WHERE HE STANDS WITH THE ELECTORATE. AND I THINK THAT IS ALWAYS UNDERSTANDABLE WITH A POLITICIAN.

INTERVIEWER: "DO YOU THINK THE METHODS MR SMITH HAS USED WILL ACCURATELY GAUGE THE FEELINGS OF THE AFRICAN PEOPLE?"

WELENSKY: WELL, THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT AND DELICATE QUESTION. I KNOW THE IMPRESSION HAS BEEN GIVEN THAT THE INDABA OF THE CHIEFS WASN'T RUN IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY. BUT QUITE FRANKLY, IN RELATION TO THE TRIBAL AREAS, I KNOW NO OTHER METHOD WHEREBY ONE CAN FIND AFRICAN OPINION EXCEPT THROUGH THE CHIEFS. THE IMPRESSION WAS GIVEN THAT IT WAS HELD IN GREAT SECRECY, BUT I'M TOLD THAT THIS WAS DONE TO PROTECT THE CHIEFS."

INTERVIEWER : "AND YOU ACCEPT THIS?"

WELENSKY: "I ACCEPT THERE IS NO OTHER METHOD OF SOUNDING THE TRIBAL TRUST AREAS. I DON'T KNOW ANY."

INTERVIEWER: "DO YOU THINK THE DANGER OF A UNILATERAL DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE HAS NOW RECEDED?"

WELENSKY: I THINK FOR THE MOMENT THE HEAT IS OFF A BIT. BUT I SINCERELY HOPE THAT NEGOTIATIONS WILL START BETWEEN THE TOW GOVERNMENTS IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE."

SEQ. 8: INTERVIEWER: "THANK YOU, SIR."
