Background: Violence broke out at a political meeting in Quito, capital of Ecuador, March 19, between supporters of two rival candidates in the Presidential election, to be held this June.
Troops - on foot and horseback - assisted police in dispersing the crowds, but order was only restored after seven people had been killed and thirty-five injured.
The clash occurred between supporters of former President Galo Plaza, who were carrying black flags, and those of former President Jose Maria Velasco. Both men are now entitled to seek re-election following President Camillo Ponce's current 4-year term of office.
