    An Irishman - 31-year-old William McMillan of Belfast -- is the new world champion ploughman. He won the title on the fourth and final day of the seventh world contest at Armoy, County Antrim, October 10.

    It took the judges four hours to choose the winner. McMillan, so near to winning the title in Germany last year, was competing in a world championship for the fourth year.

    Runner-up was 31-year-old Charles Bonney of Princeton, Ontario, Canada; a breeder of shorthorn cattle. He ploughed on Plot 13. Bonney's teem-mate, Carl B. Willis, from Prince Edward Island, came third.

    Competitors came from 16 countries to stake a claim for the Golden Plough - the trophy of master ploughmen.

    Awards were presented by Lord Wakehurst, the County Governor. Afterwards, watched by the 30 competitors, Lord Wakehurst, unveiled the Cairn of Peace - a monument surmounted by a replica of the Golden Plough. A stone from each of the 16 competing countries was used in the building of the cairn.

    After the unveiling ceremony, the flags of the nations were slowly lowered by the ploughmen.
