London police arrested Guenter Fritz Erwin Podola, east German and deportee from Canada, July 16, in connection with the shooting of Detective Sergeant Raymond Purdy. Podola was found in a Queen's Gate flat, West London, within hours of a photograph and description of him arriving from the Royal Mounted Police HQ in Ottawa.
Police escorted the bare-foot Podola from the flat. As he came down ???irs about thirty policemen and detectives surrounded him. Over Podola's was a raincoat.
Sergeant Purdy was shot dead July 13 while arresting a man in West London. He and fellow Sergeant Sandford had raced to a telephone box after Post Office engineers traced a call from a blackmailer to his victim. When Sandford went to phone for a police van the arrested man pulled out a pistol and shot Purdy through the heart.
Mrs. Joen Schiffman, the blackmail victim who had spoken to the murder minutes before Purdy was shot, accompanied police to Chelsea Police Station where Podola was being held. Since the murder she has had a police bodyguard.
During the early hours of Friday morning, July 17, Podola was taken from Chelsea Police Station to St. Stephens Hospital, Fulham, West London, for observations. Scotland Yard said he would probably be charged in the near future.
