Background: Twenty four hours after these scenes were taken of the European Cup soccer match between Red Star Belgrade and Manchester United, four of the Manchester players lay dead in the smouldering wreck of the charter plane that was taking them home, Three of the team's reserve players and fourteen other passengers including sporting journalists, also lost their lives.

The tragedy occurred as the Elizabethan airliner was taking off from Munich. After two unsuccessful attempts to achieve flying speed, the pilot made a third run, but this time was unable to stop and crashed into a house.

The players who lost their lives were left-back and Captain Roger Byrne (an England International), centre-half Mark Jones, right-half Edward Colman, centre-forward Tommy Taylor (England International). The reserves who died were; Bent, Whelan and Pegg.

United, who were beaten only in the final of last year's European Cup Tournament, won their round against Red Star on goal aggregate. A goal to spare from their first match in Manchester, they came to Belgrade having only to win or draw to go through to the next round.

They actually succeeded in drawing 3-3. Indeed, in the first half when they scored their three goals to Red Star's none, it seemed they would overwhelm the Jugoslavs, but Red Star fought back magnificently after the interval to force a draw.

On hearing the news of the terrible disaster which overtook their recent opponents, Red Star have called upon the European Cup organisers to elect Manchester United honorary European champions for the year.

Players numbered; Byrne (3) Jones (5) Colman (4) Taylor (9)
All the other players except goalkeeper Gregg, and right back Foulkes (2) received serious injuries. Gregg and Foulkes escaped with shock.
