  • Description

Cardiff in Wales the scene of this year's British Empire Games has put on its 'best suit' for the competing athletes of 37 nations, and flags and bunting hang from all the buildings in and around the city centre.

In the Empire Games Village on the outskirts of Cardiff athletes can enjoy the open air life.

Looking like advertisements for the good life, they savour its amenities with the graceful bearing, borne out of fitness, that has made this village the healthiest in the world.

The princes and princesses of athletism, 1,500 in number, can relax, after the trials of the day, in this comfortable and impeccably organized village.

The flags flutter in the fresh air. Below, spotless huts partitioned-off into bright cubicles. Gay stalls where free coffee is served. Arms Park, the athletic stadium. The tracks of grass and cinder. Rest rooms with television and billiard tables. And dining rooms with meals for 1,400 at any one time.

An army of village guardians are at the disposition of the princes and princesses. One thousand five hundred wardrobes to tidy, 1,500 beds, 6,000 blankets, 6,000 sheets. And buses stand by to take the modern gladiators off to the calm of the woods and hills of Glamorganshire, or to the beflagged City of Cardiff with its castle and swimming pool and its hotels and houses packed with another army - the throbbing worshippers of the Games.
