    MORE THAN THREE THOUSAND TROOPS TOOK PART IN A PARADE AROUND THE NURBURGRING, NEAR BONN, IN WEST GERMANY TODAY (FRIDAY). THE OCCASION WAS TO MARK THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANISATION (NATO).

    LED BY A FLAG-BEARING PARTY, CARRYING THE NATIONAL FLAGS OF THE 14-MEMBER NATIONS OF NATO, THE TROOPS AND NAVAL UNITS SWUNG PAST THE REVIEWING STAND. THE OFFICIAL PARTY WAS HEADED BY WEST GERMAN CHANCELLOR, DR. KURT GEORG KIESINGER, WEST GERMAN DEFENCE MINISTER, DR. GERHARD SCHRODER, AND NATO SUPREME COMMANDER, GENERAL LYMAN L. LEMNITZER.

    ALMOST 300 VEHICLES TOOK PART IN THE PARADE -- 256 OF THESE WERE TANKS OR ARMOURED VEHICLES.

    THE LATEST MISSILES IN THE NATO ARMOURY -- HAWK, NIKE-HERCULES AND PERSHING -- WERE ALSO INCLUDED IN THE DISPLAY, WHICH WAS LED BY THE COMMANDER OF THE FIFTH PANZER DIVISION, BRIGADIER-GENERAL HANS-JOACHIM VON HOPFFGARTEN.

    NATO WAS CREATED ON APRIL 4, 1949, IN A TREATY SIGNED IN WASHINGTON BY BELGIUM, CANADA, DENMARK, FRANCE, ICELAND, ITALY, LUXEMBOURG, THE NETHERLANDS, NORWAY, PORTUGAL, THE UNITED KINGDOM THE UNITED STATES, GREECE, TURKEY AND WEST GERMANY HAVE JOINED SINCE.
