  • Description

An Indonesian woman who hoaxed several top government officials with her so-called miracle baby was yesterday (Wednesday) brought back to Djakarta under police escort.

The woman, Mrs. Tjut Zahara Fonna, 23, escaped from detention last week in Bandjarmasin, the capital of south Borneo. She was recaptured on Saturday as she was about to sail for Surabaya in East Java.

Mrs. Fonna had earlier deceived several high-ranking government officials including President Suharto and Foreign Minister Adam Malik into believing that her unborn baby could pray and recite passages from the Koran.

She was arrested on October 30th after doctors proved she was not pregnant. Police seized a tiny tape recorder which played baby sounds and quotes from the Koran.

No formal charges have been laid so far against either Mrs. Fonna or her husband, who is under detention in Djakarta.

A police spokesman said today Mrs. Fonna would undergo further interrogation to find out if there was a political motive behind the hoax.
