  • Description

GUILIO TRAVAGLIO, AGED 24, WON THE 18-MILE (28 KMS) CAPRINAPLES MARATHON SWIM YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) FOR THE THIRD SUCCESSIVE YEAR. TRAVAGLIO, A PROFESSIONAL, COVERED THE DISTANCE IN EIGHT HOURS, 12 MINUTES, 54 SECONDS.

THE LEADING AMATEUR IN THE RACE -- AND SECOND OVERALL -- WAS ANOTHER ITALIAN, ANTONIO SCAMARDELLA, IN A TIME OF EIGHT HOURS, 25 MINUTES 50 SECONDS.

THE SWIMMERS ENTERED THE WATER IN TWO GROUPS. IN THE FIRST GROUP THE EVENTUAL WINNING BUNCH OF SWIMMERS, INCLUDING TRAVAGLIO, SCAMARDELLA AND THE EGYPTIAN EL ENIN, MADE THE EARLY PACE. EL ENIN WAS IN FRONT IN THE OPENING STAGES OF THE RACE, BUT DROPPED OUT WITH STOMACH CRAMP.

SOON, THE TWO ITALIANS WERE FIFTEEN MINUTES AHEAD OF THE REST OF THE FIELD, ALTHOUGH TWO OTHER EGYPTIANS, SHEDIQ AND HANAFI, STROVE DESPERATELY TO CATCH UP.

IN THE END, THE TWO EGYPTIANS WERE ADJUDGED JOINT THIRD IN THE RACE OVERALL, WITH TIME OF EIGHT HOURS, 35 MINUTES 17 SECONDS.

AMONG THE WOMEN COMPETITORS IN THE ANNUAL MARATHON WERE THE AUSTRALIAN LINDA McGILL AND THE CANADIAN GIRL HEDY SCHMIDT.
