  • Description

The attack aircraft carriers USS SARATOGA of the Atlantic Fleet and USS CORAL SEA of the Pacific Fleet carried out a simulated air strike on a target complex at the Naval Air Station, Dallas, Texas.

The exercise, called "Operation Longhorn", demonstrated the range strike capability of the two fast carrier striking forces off the eastern and western shores of the United States.

Aircraft from the two attack carriers will fly the 3,000 mile round trip to Dallas and return to their respective carriers, refueling in flight from carrier based tanker aircraft.

Among those watching will be Secretary of the Navy, Paul H. Nitze and the Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral David L. Mc Donald, USN.
